Using Kumo.io
Diagrams
Every diagram is drawn from a snapshot of your synced infrastructure. You can explore it, change what it includes, change how it is drawn, and pin notes to it. Editing a diagram changes its appearance only. Your resources and connections always come from your cloud.
Find a diagram
Open Diagrams in the sidebar to see your diagrams as a gallery, or choose Browse for a list. An environment's page also lists the diagrams drawn from it.
To add one, choose New Diagram. Under How Should It Be Built? pick:
- Auto-Generate (Recommended): Kumo.io picks the templates that match the environment and renders its default diagrams.
- From a Template: choose one Template and give the diagram a Diagram Name.
The environment needs at least one completed sync before Kumo.io can draw it. For the kinds of diagram Kumo.io can draw, see What diagrams can Kumo.io draw?
Read the canvas
A diagram opens in Explore mode, so a link you send never drops someone into an editor. Pan and zoom the canvas, and select a node to see that resource's attributes. The rail beside the canvas has three tabs:
- Resources: inspect the selected resource.
- Tags: list every tag key and value on the diagram's resources, with counts. Select values to filter: resources that don't match are dimmed. Values of the same key are combined with OR, different keys with AND. The filter only changes what is highlighted on your screen; it saves nothing.
- Notes: notes and drawn connections on this diagram (see below).
The strip above the canvas keeps two times apart: Rendered is when this picture was drawn, and Sources observed is when Kumo.io last read the infrastructure behind it. A diagram rendered today from week-old data says so.
Snapshots
Each time a diagram is regenerated, Kumo.io keeps the earlier picture as a snapshot. Use Snapshots to open an earlier one. An earlier snapshot is read-only: nothing in it changes when a newer one is generated, and Open Latest takes you back. Some older snapshots predate stored diagram settings; those show their saved image instead of the interactive canvas, and the page tells you so.
Change what a diagram includes
The Context panel beside the canvas controls which resources the diagram pulls in and how they nest. It has a Simple editor and an Advanced editor, and the Advanced editor can show the query as JSON with Edit as JSON. Choose Apply to rebuild the canvas with your changes.
A context change reshapes the diagram on your screen only. It is not saved to the diagram and needs no edit permission. The panel starts closed so the canvas has the room: select Show Context Panel to open it. Once you open it, Kumo.io remembers and opens it next time; on a phone or narrow window it always starts closed. Hide Context Panel closes it again. To learn the query language behind it, see How do I ask "what does this reach?"
Change how a diagram is drawn
Choose Edit in the diagram toolbar to change the diagram's template and layout. Edit is available on the latest snapshot only, and only while overlays are off. Editing never changes your resources or connections; those always come from your cloud.
When you're done, choose how far the change reaches:
| Option | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Save to this diagram | How this diagram is drawn. No other diagram is affected. |
| Save as account template override… | The inherited appearance for every diagram that uses this template in your account. Diagrams with their own saved appearance keep it. |
| Restore inherited appearance | Removes this diagram's saved appearance. It then inherits again, which may be an account override rather than Kumo.io's default. |
Appearance is resolved in this order: the diagram's own saved appearance, then your account's template override, then the template's default. Saving regenerates the diagram.
Saving to one diagram needs a role that can manage the workspace. Saving an account template override needs a role that can change account settings. If your role can't, the control is locked with Your role doesn't allow this.
Overlays
The Layers menu adds information on top of the diagram:
- Notes (N): your team's notes, pinned to the diagram's nodes.
- Cost: the last 30 days of spend, with nodes tinted by cost and a chip per node. It covers priced resources only, and needs a plan with cost visibility. See What does my infrastructure cost?
Overlays draw on the stored image, so turning one on pauses the interactive diagram. Choose Back to Interactive Diagram to turn them off.
Notes and drawn connections
Open the Notes tab in the rail to annotate a diagram:
- Add a note: type it and choose Add note, or select a node first and choose Add note on selected node to pin it there.
- Draw a connection: select a node and choose Set "from" = selected, then select a second node and choose Connect "from" → selected. You can give it a Connection label (optional). A drawn connection is decoration only; it never becomes part of your graph.
Notes and drawn connections are visible to everyone in the workspace. They belong to the diagram, not to a snapshot, so they survive regeneration. An environment's page has its own notes panel for notes about the whole environment. Adding notes needs a role that can manage annotations.
Compare snapshots
Compare in the diagram toolbar opens a side-by-side comparison of snapshots, with the classified list of what changed. Comparison needs the Business plan. See What changed in my estate?
Plans and diagrams
| Plan | What you see |
|---|---|
| During a trial, and read-only after one | A Limited Preview: some resources are hidden and the canvas is watermarked. Export and sharing are locked. |
| Team and above | Every resource, with no watermark. Export and share links are available. |
| Enterprise (Licensed) (self-hosted) | Every resource, with no watermark, and every export and share option. |
When a control is locked by your plan, selecting it opens an upgrade panel explaining what it unlocks. See What does each plan include?
