Connect an installation

Connecting links a self-hosted installation to your Kumo.io account. It unlocks the product, starts your evaluation trial, and makes you the installation's owner.

Applies to: Self-hostedPlan: Allno card needed to evaluate14-day trialaccount.kumo.io

Why connect

A new self-hosted installation starts restricted: until it is linked to a Kumo.io account, opening it shows the setup screen instead of the product. Connecting:

  • starts your account's 14-day evaluation trial — no payment details needed,
  • makes the account that approves the connection the installation's owner, who can log in to the installation's system pages,
  • lists the installation under Installations in your account portal.

Your cloud inventory, graph and credentials never leave the installation. Connecting exchanges the installation's identity and entitlement with Kumo.io — the portal shows its name, version, distribution, architecture and when it last checked in.

Connecting is available on installations that run the all-in-one container: the single container and the all-in-one topology of kumo deployment.

What the installation needs

  • Outbound HTTPS to Kumo.io's service — by default bootstrap.kumo.io and connect.kumo.io. If Kumo.io can't be reached, the setup page says so.
  • A browser on the same machine, if the installation is served over plain HTTP. Kumo.io accepts the connect action only from a browser on the machine itself (http://localhost:9500) unless the installation runs at an https:// address set in KUMO_EXTERNAL_URL.
  • A Kumo.io account. You can create one during the connect step.

Connect

  1. Open the installation, for example http://localhost:9500. Until it is connected, it shows its setup screen in three steps: Account, Connect and Activate. (The same screen is at /setup.)
  2. Account. Choose Create your Kumo.io account, or switch to Sign in to Kumo.io if you already have one. You can continue with Google, GitHub or Facebook, use an email and password, or ask for a sign-in link by email.
  3. Connect. Under Name this installation, give it an Installation name. If you belong to more than one Kumo.io account, choose which one. Then select Connect this installation.
  4. Activate. When you see You're all set, select Open Kumo.io. You're signed in to the installation as its owner.

If the installation needs a plan before it can continue, the setup screen shows Choose a plan instead; you complete payment and the page unlocks.

See and manage your installations

Your account's installations are listed at https://account.kumo.io/installations, with each one's status, version, distribution, architecture, last check-in and plan. Open an installation to:

  • Rename it,
  • Deactivate installation — it stops receiving renewed entitlements. Local data is not deleted, and the installation keeps working on its remaining entitlement until that entitlement and its grace period end. Deactivating asks you to type the installation name to confirm, and may ask you to log in again.

When the trial ends

When the trial ends, the product shows Your trial has ended instead of your workspaces. Your data stays on the installation.

Hosted workspaces

You don't connect a hosted workspace — it is part of your account already. In the portal it appears as Hosted workspace with an Open workspace link.
